Hey, All You Honey Nut Clusters Fans!

I've noticed that a whole bunch of people have been stopping by having an apparent interest in the availability of General Mills "Honey Nut Clusters" cereal. As I've noted in two previous posts, I've had a difficult time finding 'Clusters' in local Indy stores. To date, I have found them only at a Safeway store on the north side of town. I have written emails to General Mills about 'Clusters.' This was about a year ago. At that time I was told that 'Clusters' was still being produced, but that a number of stores had opted to pull them in favor of other, apparently better selling cereals.

If you are having similar problems, but still have a hankering for a bowl of "Honey Nut Clusters" give General Mills a jingle, or send them an email. Let them know that you want your 'Clusters' back. Let's get a campaign going. Hey, it worked for the TV show "Jericho" - for a season, anyhow. Why not for 'Clusters?'

It also might help if you start a barrage of emails, calls, letters, sit-ins, or whatever at your local grocery stores. In Indy, the major super markets are Krogers, Marsh, Meijer and Wall Mart. None carry 'Clusters.' All did so at one time.

If any of you choose to take up the gauntlet, let me know; especially if you have any success. I'd love to hear from you.

I'm not a fan of the Clusters (of course, I've never tried them) but I am a fan of the Cluster's Saga. :-)

I eat clusters seven days a week. I am having difficulty getting them in the Rocky Mount, NC area. For me there is no other cereal!

Yeah, it's kinda crazy, isn't it? I have them probably 4 mornings a week. For a time there was only 1 store in Indy that I found carrying them - a Safeway store on the north side of town.

I few months ago, I was strolling through our nearby Meijer store when - Voila! What do I spy in the cereal aisle? Honey Nut Clusters!!
They are still carrying them. Woohoo!

No other area stores have started carrying them as far as I know.

I'm not familiar with your part of the country, but if there are any Meijer or Safeway stores around, you might check them out.

Same problem in Texas. I'm running out of places to look for the cereal. I've tried other cereals packaged the same but more "Healthy", and they taste like crap. Luckily we have a store called Central Market that carries hard to get items like that. Good popcorn like Black Diamond, good pickles like the Sechler's from Indy, and so on. Still can't get the Wick's Sugar Cream Pies from Indy. If Central Market doesn't have it, I'll just have to get granola.

I don't know if you have Meijer where you are, but that is where I have found them of late. They stopped carrying them for a couple of years, but lo and behold, I found them on the shelf there a few months ago.

Wicks is about the best commercial sugar cream pie around. I make one myself from a recipe my mother used. If I manage not to scorch it, it's damn good, but I run about 50/50 - that is about half the time it turns out crispy rather than creamy.

The only other place I've found Clusters is at a Safeway store on the north side of town. Area Kroger stores removed Clusters and apparently replaced it with more varieties of GMs "Total" group of cereals which - I agree fully - taste like crap - or more aptly, like cardboard.

I have tried my best to like one variety or other of Post's Honey Bunches of Oats, but they just don't do it for me. About the only other mainstream dry cereal I can eat is GMs Multi-Grain Cheerios. I usually sprinkle some Post Grape Nuts on it to add some crunch.

How can we be expected to deal with middle east wars and a bad economy if we can't at least have 15 minutes in the morning chowing down our favorite cereal, right?

BTW - Sorry for some of the SPAM comments. I've been getting a lot of them lately. I've complained to Blogspot pretty much to no avail. I try to police the "anonymous" comments, but some slip by me - especially on older posts.

I mix Clusters with shredded wheat seven days a week. The stores in my area have been eliminating them from the shelves and want to find a dependable source. I just can't live without them! WLF

Terry S said...

Anon,

You seem to have the bug even worse than I do. Hell of a thing isn't it?

I rarely mix my Clusters, though. I guess I'm a purest. :)

However, I DO mix other cereals to make sort of a grainy breakfast cocktail. I tend to sprinkle Grape Nuts over cereals like Multi-Grain Cheerios.

I am happy, though, that I have found 2 (count em, TWO) sources here in Indy - Safeway and Meijer. I'd feel more secure if I once again found them at like Kroger or Wal Mart. Life is hell!

I thought I was the only one missing my fix of Clusters!

Hi
Very nice and intrestingss story.

I've been told that Clusters was discontinued from the one remaining online source I had. This is a sad day.

I love Honey Nut Clusters...How could they pull such a great cereal?! I can barely find the stuff on-line anymore!

Anonymous said...

I found them on Amazon!

I've written a # of articles about Clusters since this one. I recently sent a message to General Mills, to which they responded that Honey Nut Clusters are still being produced, but each store is free to choose which cereals to stock. Apparently, Clusters doesn't sell as well as Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs.

I suggest that you go to a nearby grocery - preferable a smaller one - not WalMart or Krogers, etc. and request the store carry Clusters. If you persist, you just may entice them to do so.

You CAN buy them on-line at Amazon and perhaps some other sites, but you have to buy an entire case, I think that's a dozen boxes and the cost would be around $65. to $70 with shipping.

Just keep bugging your grocer. It just might work.

BTW - Meijer no longer carries Clusters. ONLY the Safeway at 56th St. & Illinois on Indy's north side carries Clusters as far as I know.

I am still finding them at a local Safeway, but nowhere else at this point. If you read some of the comments, someone said he had seen them at a Super K Mart here in Indy, but I've not been out that way since he posted that comment.

It's hard to imagine that they sell so poorly that none of the stores will carry them. My god, there are dozens of cereals and a lot of them are nothing more than crunchified sugar. You'd think they could provide at least 1 8" row for Clusters. But no.

Keep looking, maybe you'll get lucky.

I applaud you for your efforts, and rest assured your not alone. Clusters is by far the best cereal I have ever had, the closest substitute being Honey Bunches of Oats, is simply not the same. Apparently they changed the recipe in 2007, removing the almonds and replacing them with almond flavoring, due to the price of almonds. I'm guessing it was not a very profitable cereal for Genereal MIlls, and due to the cost was eventually removed from most store shelves. At Safeway for example it never seemed to go on special, and probably lost a lot of market share to cereals like Honey bunches of oats which often went on 2 for $4 specials. Again I can only imagine this had to do with the cost of producing the cereal being to high for them to have it on special and be profitable, hence it's eventual loss of market share. Too bad as HBOA and other like cereals fall short when compared to the holy grail of cereals...Clusters.

Kellogs Special K - Honey & Oats is not bad. It ain's Clusters, but it makes for a decent alternative.

This is funny. But I have to admit I was getting mad that I can't find them in my home town either.
Curses!

One Safeway in Sacramento Ca had them back in like 2007...I was taking my dad shopping and was like "Oh My they have my cereal" Bought all 7 boxes on the shelf went back 3 times and to find they never restocked:( I googled today to see what happened and found similar stories...the world as we know it has gone to the birds!!! I want my squirrels back!!!

My local supermarket (Stop & Shop.. the Griffins, from Family Guy, shop there too) has 11 different kinds of Cheerios and still no Honey Nut Clusters!
It's the best cold cereal out there. All General Mills needs to do is re-air those unforgettable squirrel commercials.

I'm amazed at the legs my "Clusters" posts have had. When you consider that most of the larger retailers have what often amounts to an entire aisle of cereal, you'd think they could manage the 8" or 9" necessary to have a minimal inventory of "Clusters," but no.

I am on a hunt every month for this cereal for my mom. She is 87, and refuses to eat anything else. I contacted General Mills and was given the only store in Sacramento, CA is at one of the Target stores. Not always lucky to find any on shelf, like today's hunt. I have to drive across town and check myself as when I call the store, I get round-a-bout answers. Good luck!

Amazon has them online! 3 for about $12.95!

I just called General Mills and they said they finally decided to discontinue Honey Nut Clusters May 28th of 2013 :(

They said you can still get it on Amazon.com or do a product search on their website for nearby stores that have sold in the last 90 days. Call first because they may be out. I'm so upset! It's my favorite cereal ever!!

Terry S said...

You are correct. I made the same discovery just yesterday. I went to the one store that carried them here in Indy a couple days ago, and Clusters were no longer on the shelves. I, too, went to General Mills website and made the discovery that they were discontinued.

I bought some on Amazon, but it cost around $20 for 3 boxes. Check out Soap.com. I bought 6 boxes from them for around $16. including shipping. I suppose they will be available until their current supplies are sold.

Sad, sad times indeed!
